SUVs are one of the fastest growing segments in the automotive industry. In fact, SUVs now account for nearly 25% of all new car sales in the United States. It’s easy to see why: SUVs have a high safety rating, lots of room for passengers and cargo, and they’re often comfortable to drive. But how did these vehicles come about? Where did they start? Let’s take a look at how SUVs evolved into what they are today:

The SUV is a vehicle that started out as an on-road family car

The SUV is a type of vehicle that was originally designed to transport families, but has since evolved into something else.

While the term “Sports Utility Vehicle” may seem self-explanatory (it’s a vehicle used for sports), it actually came into use in 1966 when Jeep introduced its first four-door model called the Wagoneer. These were built with rugged off-road capabilities and roomy interiors, so they could handle both rough terrain and large groups comfortably. It wasn’t until 1980 that Toyota launched its first full-sized truck with an extended cab–the 4Runner–and even then these cars were still marketed as family vehicles rather than sports cars or luxury vehicles like today’s SUVs tend to be marketed as.

The first SUV was built in 1928, and it had an air-cooled engine.

The car was called a “sport utility vehicle” because it was designed to be a family car that could handle rough terrain. The name “SUV” wasn’t used until 1984 when Americans began buying more luxury vehicles than they had before.

Today’s SUVs are much larger than the early models.

SUV manufacturers are building larger SUVs to attract more buyers, and they’re doing so with a focus on luxury.

Today’s luxury SUVs offer some of the most advanced technology and safety features in their class, including:

  • Adaptive cruise control systems that automatically adjust speed based on traffic conditions or stop-and-go traffic;
  • Collision avoidance systems that can detect vehicles in your path and apply brakes automatically if necessary;
  • Lane departure warning systems that alert drivers when they begin to drift out of their lane without signaling;
  • Blind spot monitoring systems (which alert drivers when other cars are approaching from either side)

Early SUVs were popular with families because they were safe and reliable.

As such, they carried the same reputation into the 21st century. However, over time, SUVs have become increasingly popular with other groups of people–namely those who are active outdoors and need an all-terrain vehicle to take them where they want to go.

SUVs are still popular with families because they are safe and reliable. But don’t forget about other types of drivers: those who want something fun for weekend trips or even professional drivers who need something sturdy enough for long commutes!

Luxury SUVs are now the fastest growing segment in the industry.

Luxury SUVs are now the fastest growing segment in the industry. This is due to a number of factors, including:

  • A wide range of consumers are attracted to these vehicles because they offer both luxury and practicality. They can be used as everyday cars or weekend getaways, depending on what your needs may be at any given time.
  • Luxury SUVs also provide great value for money compared to other options like sedans or coupes.

SUVs have changed a lot since they were invented, but their appeal has remained constant.

  • SUVs are now the most popular vehicle in the market.
  • This popularity is not limited to any particular demographic or region, either. SUV sales have increased across all ages and genders, in both urban and rural areas, and across all income brackets from low to high.
  • The appeal of SUVs has remained constant over time: they offer plenty of space for passengers, cargo, or both; they’re rugged enough to tackle unpaved roads; they can seat up to seven people comfortably; they have plenty of room for storage under seats or behind rear seats…and those are just some of their benefits!

Conclusion

SUVs are one of the most popular types of vehicle on the road today. They have evolved over time and now offer more luxury features than ever before. However, their appeal has always been their ability to provide drivers with a safe and reliable ride no matter where they go.
